What is Islam?
Islam is a monotheistic religion that emerged in the 7th century CE (Common Era) in the Arabian Peninsula. Its followers, the Muslims, believe in one God (Allah) and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), whose revelations are recorded in the Quran and Sunnah. This faith emphasizes community bonds, ethical conduct and justice.
Sometimes called “Submission” (Islam means “submission” in Arabic), it’s also referred to as the Muslim faith or Din al-Islam (Religion of Submission). In older texts you might see “Mohammedanism,” though that’s considered inaccurate and outdated. Real-life textbooks no longer use it. Very outdated.
For students diving into Islamic studies the main fields include: theology (aqidah), jurisprudence (fiqh), Quranic exegesis (tafsir), hadith sciences, Sufism (tasawwuf), seerah (Prophetic biography), Islamic history and comparative studies. Lots to explore. For instance, studying fiqh teaches proper prayer rituals and business ethics, while tafsir classes unpack verses in everyday contexts like charity programs.
Beginning in 610 CE when Muhammad (PBUH) recieved his first revelation in the Cave of Hira, Islam quickly spread. The Hijra to Medina in 622 CE marks year one of the Islamic calendar. By 630 CE Mecca was peacefully conquered. Four rightly guided caliphs followed, consolidating rule across Arabia. The Umayyad and then Abbasid dynasties oversaw expansion into Spain, North Africa and Central Asia. Notably the Ottoman Empire rose in the 14th century lasting until 1924. Modern times witness global Muslim communities engaging in education, politics and interfaith dialogue.

What is so special about Islam?
Islam studies offers a unique view on faith, law, and daily life. It covers history from Muhammad’s time to modern societies, linking religion with culture, art, and science. Its focus on both belief and practice helps students see how ideas shape laws, ethics, and community life. This balanced approach sets it apart from many other subjects in Religious Studies.
One advantage of Islam studies is its clear texts and laws that guide moral decisions and community actions. It also offers rich literature, art, and scientific contributions. On the downside, students may need to learn Arabic to read originals, and the subject can involve complex debates in theology and law. Sometimes cultural or political views affect how topics are taught.
What are the career opportunities in Islam?
After completing introductory studies in Islam, students can pursue advanced degrees in Islamic Studies, like MA or Ph.D., specialise in Quranic exegesis, Hadith, Islamic history, law (fiqh) or theology at universities. Online programs in Islamic finance and comparative religion grow in demand.
Graduates find roles as academics, researchers, or teachers in schools, colleges and centres. Many serve as imams, chaplains or counsellors in mosques, hospitals or universities. Others work in non‑profits, policy organisations or Islamic finance firms, designing ethical banking solutions.
Studying for exams in Islam deepens knowledge of beliefs, history and texts. Test preparation builds critical reading and interpretation skills. It also sharpens memory and understanding, helping students engage in thoughtful discussion and reflect on moral values.
Knowledge of Islam promotes interfaith dialogue, cultural awareness and social cohesion. It aids roles in community leadership, education or diplomacy. Understanding Islamic principles also supports careers in human rights, media, publishing and ethical business practices.
How to learn Islam?
Start by learning the core beliefs (Aqeedah), basic rulings (Fiqh), and key texts: read the Quran with translation, study Hadith collections, and follow a simple online course. Set clear goals, make a study plan, practice daily, and join study groups or online forums to stay motivated.
Islam isn’t hard if you take it step by step. Some topics like Arabic grammar or memorizing verses may feel challenging at first, but regular practice, simple explanations, and support make it much easier over time.
You can begin on your own using books, videos, and apps. But a tutor helps you avoid mistakes, answers questions in real time, and keeps you on track. One‑to‑one guidance speeds up learning and builds confidence.
MEB offers experienced Islamic studies tutors who adapt lessons to your pace. We provide clear lesson plans, regular feedback, and flexible online slots. Whether you need exam prep, assignment help, or general guidance, our tutors are here 24/7 at affordable rates.
Time varies by goal: a basic overview takes 4–6 weeks with daily study, while solid grounding in Quran, Hadith, and Fiqh often needs 3–6 months. Mastery and deeper study continue over years as you grow in understanding.
