  • Flexibility with timing and pricing helps retain students in a part-time schedule.
  • Punctuality and session quality matter as much in part-time tutoring as in full-time roles.
  • Seasonal demand swings are normal; work at least 1–2 years before going full-time.

Want to succeed in a part-time tutoring job as a side hustle?

Read on to get the lowdown on how to succeed in a part-time tutoring job. My Engineering Buddy (MEB), the organization that I started 18+ years ago and of which I am the CEO, has worked with more than 1,000+ verified tutors as part-time tutors. I am also a part-time tutor for my own company.

I have had personal interactions with almost all of the tutors who have worked for MEB. Based on them and also on my own experience, I will answer this question as best I can.

But first, let’s consider if part-time tutoring positions are worthwhile so that you can decide if it is something you want to consider doing as a side hustle in the future. If you are also exploring niche certification subjects, finding an IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language tutor is one example of how specialized part-time tutoring can be.

I reckon a part-time tutoring job is indeed a great side hustle! In fact, if done right, they can be among the best things one can do for some extra income.

Along with the extra money you can earn, you also receive the following advantages:

  • You learn more the more you are able to communicate.
  • You can continue to learn about the subject(s) you enjoy.
  • The joy you have when you share your knowledge is immeasurable.

Some of the crucial things that may decide an individual’s success as a part-time teacher are:

Enjoying Your Tutoring Job

When I ask our top tutors how their students are doing, I can see the glow in their eyes. They delight in describing how they teach a complex concept or a challenging idea to the student. The pupil is overjoyed when they finally get a grasp on the subject.

If, however, the extra cash from part-time tutoring is your sole stimulus without the process meaning much to you, you will quickly become exhausted and consider giving up.

Having Thorough Subject Knowledge

You shall be an expert in the subject you plan to teach. That is a must. Without in-depth knowledge, you cannot succeed as a tutor.

All of our top tutors are authorities in the subjects they teach, without exception. I don’t recall finding any successful tutors with mediocre topic expertise in the last 18+ years. If you are not an expert in your field, you might have some short-term success, but it won’t be with you for very long.

This applies equally to highly technical fields — for instance, a compiler design tutor must command the subject deeply before taking on students part-time.

Not Letting Your Primary Job Interfere with the Tutoring Job

You cannot take your tutoring sessions lightly just because you are only working part-time. No matter whether you are a full-time tutor or doing it only as a side hustle, your students won’t know or care. They anticipate that you will give it your all and teach them with enthusiasm when you are with them.

You shall not make them feel that you are too exhausted from your usual employment to give your 100%. If you say so, your student will lose faith in you.

I polled the majority of our top tutors, and they all indicated they enjoyed instructing and that it was unaffected by their day jobs.

Being Flexible in Terms of Tutoring Timing

When you choose to include a part-time tutoring job in your work portfolio, flexibility with timing is much more crucial. You will have fewer opportunities because you are working fewer hours on your side hustle. However, you should try to be accommodating when presented with the chance, even if it requires you to make a few little changes to your daily schedule.

Let me give you a practical example of how it can play out. One of my college classmates started working for MEB as a part-time tutor some years ago. Although he was successful as a tutor, he wasn’t willing to adjust much according to the student’s requirements. He used to turn down the late-night urgent pleas from the students.

He also used to say ‘no’ when he didn’t feel like working and never made much of an extra effort to comply with the requests. Even his usual students started switching to new instructors day by day. He left after eight months since so few students were interested in talking to him.

Taking Care of Yourself Physically and Mentally

You may become exhausted both physically and mentally from working overtime. If you are deprived of sleep, rest, social connections, and personal time, it will have a negative impact on both your physical and emotional health.

You must learn to take care of your body and mind by heeding the advice provided here if you want to achieve success in your part-time tutoring job, as it guarantees the continued good health of your body and mind.

  • Eat nourishing food.
  • Get sound sleep and recover well.
  • Exercise! Either walk or play your favorite sport.
  • Don’t indulge in late-night meals and snacks.
  • Relish every moment with your loved ones.

Maintaining a High Quality of Service

Once you have secured a student, even for a demo session, everything depends on the quality of your tutoring. There should never be a compromise made regarding the caliber of the lessons, and you shall teach in a way that the student wants to learn more. You ought to strengthen your student’s academic path.

If you maintain high standards, your pupils will adore you, and you’ll never run out of tutoring assignments.

Students who receive part-time tutoring will become accustomed to your reduced availability. You must make up for it by offering a service that goes above and beyond their expectations.

Here is what my 18+ years of expertise say about what a “high standard” entails in tutoring jobs:

  • Make sure you adequately prepare for the session to avoid wasting the students’ time. Before starting an online lesson, check your laptop’s or tablet’s internet connection.
  • If the contents are difficult for you or come from a different educational system or background, study them and prepare well beforehand.
  • Double-check your answers. There could be a few mistakes. To err is human.

Coming to Terms with the Ebb and Flow of Tutoring Jobs

Any business or occupation will experience variations, and part-time ones more so. Additionally, due to the academic seasons of educational institutions, teaching has a very seasonal nature. You may be lured into the idea of quitting your primary job and working on it full-time during some months because they are so busy.

But rest assured that there are plenty of dry months when you won’t see much coming your way. So before you make the leap, I advise working for at least 1–2 years and making an informed decision.

Tutoring Fees That Are Flexible

Considering your qualifications and expertise, your day job pays you more. The same cannot be expected from your part-time tutoring position. Keep your expectations in check and set fair prices for tutoring that are comparable to what others are charging.

Additionally, you ought to be open to modifying your fees if the situation demands it. You risk losing a lot of customers if you come across as someone who is too inflexible.

Punctuality

Time management can be challenging, especially while working a regular job. We only get 24 hours, so it is imperative that you use them well. You will lose students faster than you can imagine if you are not prompt.

You can use technology to stay on top of your commitments (calendar applications, alerts, Google Sheets, etc.). In my experience, I have seen a lot of good instructors struggle to find enough students because they weren’t organized enough.

Not Providing Free Tutoring Services

When starting out, you may want to grow your clientele by charging incredibly inexpensive rates. Even though this is the best course of action initially, many tutors end up locked into these cheap rates or free sessions and are unable to demand higher rates in the future. It is another matter if you provide a short demo session for free if the client requests it.

Low prices are detrimental to your reputation, and they create a poor first impression. For example, students will often assume that you are a subpar tutor if you offer AP Physics tutoring at $15 per hour while everyone else charges $30 per hour.

Likewise, you shouldn’t demand exorbitantly expensive fees. Make it affordable for the students, but keep it consistent with market rates. In this manner, you will enter the fray and gain a lot of traction with potential customers.

Read my blog post, How much should I charge as a tutor to find out more about the factors that affect the fee for tutoring jobs as well as the precise rates that you should be charging.

Choosing the Appropriate Teaching Job Platform

Joining a tutoring platform that doesn’t pay enough or doesn’t accomplish your objectives is not a good idea. No matter how skilled you are as a teacher and how pleased your clients are with you, you will only earn a very small amount of money from it and probably develop a dislike for the part-time job.

In addition to My Engineering Buddy, there are other tutoring websites like TeacherOn, Wyzant, Prestoexperts, etc. that allow you to determine your own fees and interact freely with the students.

Me and my team has extensively used TeacherOn for getting students and tutors. If you decide to work on TeacherOn, you may refer to my blog How to be a successful tutor on Teacheron. It will immensely benefit you.

I liked the work environment and business model of Presto Experts, where I worked from 2010 until 2014, so much that I modeled my organization’s culture and working methods after theirs.

Doing Your Own Marketing Instead, If Possible

Marketing is essential if your goal is to become independent. You will need to invest a lot of time if you use social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc. for free marketing. You’ll incur advertising costs if you run promotions on these portals.

In the near term, it is not a good bargain for the vast majority of tutors. However, if you manage to get a good ROI on the advertising cost, it will help you in the long term. In my opinion, the advantages of taking charge of your marketing are much greater than you might think.

If you work directly with the students, you will feel more connected to your passion. Your relationship with the student will grow stronger, and you will avoid paying the commission to the agencies. You will also profit from recommendations. The referrals on tutoring platforms are quite low because most clients primarily deal with the platform and not the tutor.

I was about to give up when I started My Engineering Buddy (formerly My Physics Buddy). I was unable to gain any momentum and didn’t get enough students until I started running Google Ads for myself. In fact, I had to discontinue the ads after 8 months since I had so many students. After that, I kept receiving recommendations for more students, so I never had to run the ads again.

Having Your Own Tutoring Website

I also strongly advise creating your own website if you are starting out on your own. It might only be a straightforward one-page website that you can build in WordPress in a matter of hours. Include all relevant information about you, including your rates, schedule, topics, terms and conditions, etc.

You will save a ton of time by not having to explain simple concepts to potential customers. Additionally, it increases their faith in you and gives them the fundamental details they could need, such as your fees and working hours. This website can also be used to direct traffic from marketing efforts.

Even a simple website design employing a basic template can be crucial to your success in today’s networked environment. Because you’ll be reliant on them for future payments and upgrades, I won’t encourage you to engage a freelancer to build your website. In addition to losing money, you also lose time and your head chasing them. You will have more control if you know how to make adjustments to the website’s content.

Developing Your Negotiating Skills

Admittedly, when I first started bargaining with the student, I detested it. Maintaining a consistent price came naturally to me. However, even though it is good to have a non-negotiable rate list, having some flexibility greatly aids in attracting new clients. The chances of converting a prospective client into a paying client go up sharply.

However, pricing is only one aspect of negotiation. Students could have inquiries regarding your background, credentials, method of instruction, availability, and other factors. What if the student is hesitant because of your lack of expertise, your average university degree, or the fact that your availability doesn’t match theirs? They still need to be persuaded of these points.

If you are a beginner, you can provide a trial session to demonstrate your skills. You must be prepared to offer a cheaper price to convert the student if the timing does not work out. Pricing adjustments are simply one aspect of negotiations. On YouTube, a number of expert-produced videos on negotiation are available without charge. I watched a lot of them, and I also advise you to do it.

Understanding how institutions manage student pipelines can also sharpen your own client-conversion thinking — this piece on how university enrollment automation moves applicants through the funnel offers useful perspective.

Winning the Hearts of Your Students

Talk about topics that they are interested in to keep the sessions engaging. That will help you connect on a personal level with the student. For instance, if a student enjoys music, you can inquire about their favorite bands and songs.

If your students feel that you go above and beyond what their very minimum requirements are, they will love it. It is not just your responsibility to elucidate a topic using textbook material. You must encourage them and pique their interest in the topic. They will undoubtedly begin learning at a much higher level once they become interested in the subject.

Always keep your attention on their advantage rather than your own. For instance, if it takes some extra time to clarify a notion or solve a problem, you should not shy away from doing that. Making them understand the subject matter should be your main objective. Giving an additional 5–10 minutes is OK. Your students will value it.

Concentrating on a Few Topics Where You Can Excel

For those who work in education, the “jack of all trades and master of none” approach is ineffective. Students desire immediate and accurate responses. Spreading yourself too thin by instructing in too many subjects can prevent you from being able to do justice to your role as a teacher. This is particularly true if tutoring is simply a part-time endeavor for you.

Choose a topic that interests you, not one that is currently popular. If not, you will probably quickly lose interest, and the students won’t benefit either.

Highly specialized fields reward this focus especially well — tutors offering computational fluid dynamics tutoring or Certified Internal Auditor exam guidance tend to command stronger rates precisely because they have gone deep rather than broad.

Establishing a Trusting Rapport with the Student and Their Parents

Sharing subject knowledge is only one aspect of tutoring. To be a successful tutor, you must make an effort to form deep connections with your students. Therein lies the secret to a productive, long-lasting tutoring organization. Both the tutor and the tutee need to feel at ease and secure with one another. The student should feel free to ask the tutor anything reasonable.

Complying with the Law of the Land and the Regulations

Your initial tutoring job business income will probably be little, and you will probably be exempt from taxation, business registration, segregating your personal and business accounts, etc. However, if you ignore them as you scale up, your years of effort can be for nothing in a single day.

Once your income reaches a certain level, you must register your firm, pay taxes on time, and adhere to all laws and regulations, among other things.

If you are evaluating writing-assistance platforms that students sometimes use alongside tutoring, this PapersOwl review with an honest breakdown for students is a useful reference.

Learning as If You Are Going to Live Forever

No one is perfect. The easy availability of instructional materials can help you gain a better understanding of the subject. You should work to increase the effectiveness of your sessions. The students should believe that your classes are worth their money. Therefore, you should never stop learning.

I’ve worked with more than 1,000+ verified tutors over the course of my 18+ years, and I can attest that those who are complacent perform poorly. Those who are hungry to learn and act as if they know very little perform best.

I wish you the very best on your teaching journey.
