Academic Integrity: How MEB Helps Students Ethically

Private tutoring has existed for centuries. Parents hire tutors. Students form study groups. Schools run after-hours help sessions. Universities have writing centres. All of these are accepted, encouraged forms of academic support. Online private tutoring is the same thing — more accessible, more flexible, and more personalised.

That said, there is a genuine difference between academic support and academic dishonesty. MEB takes that difference seriously. This page explains our position, what we help with, what we do not help with, and why it matters for your own long-term benefit.

Our position: MEB is a private tutoring service. Our purpose is to help students learn — to understand concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and build the academic foundation that serves them in their career and further education. We do not help students cheat. Every piece of guidance we provide is intended as a learning resource.

Why Students Legitimately Seek Academic Help

The vast majority of students who contact MEB do so for entirely valid reasons. Here are the most common situations:

Working While Studying

Many students balance part-time or full-time jobs alongside their studies. Time constraints are real, and private tutoring helps them use study time more efficiently rather than spending hours stuck on a concept a tutor could clarify in 30 minutes.

Poor Local Teaching Quality

Not every university has excellent instructors for every subject. Students in courses where the professor is difficult to follow, unavailable, or simply not strong in their subject deserve the same access to understanding as those with excellent professors.

Language Barriers

International students studying in English as a second language often understand the subject content fully but struggle to express it in the expected academic format. A tutor who can bridge the communication gap is a legitimate support tool.

Specific Topic Difficulty

A student can be strong in a subject overall and still hit a topic that does not click — a particular integration technique, a circuit analysis method, a statistical concept. One targeted session with an expert tutor can unlock understanding that weeks of struggling alone could not.

Health or Personal Circumstances

Illness, family emergencies, and personal crises do not pause academic calendars. A student who has fallen behind through no fault of their own benefits from the ability to catch up quickly with expert guidance.

Exam Preparation

Preparing for AP, SAT, GRE, MCAT, A-Level, IB, and similar high-stakes exams with a specialist tutor is standard practice. No institution considers private exam preparation tutoring to be academic dishonesty.

What MEB Helps With

We help with:

  • Private 1:1 tutoring to understand concepts and build skills
  • Test preparation and exam strategy for standardised exams
  • Working through practice problems and explaining solutions step by step
  • Reviewing and explaining lecture notes, textbook chapters, or past papers
  • Guidance on essay structure, academic writing, and argument development
  • Lab report and project guidance — helping you understand what is required and how to approach it
  • Homework guidance — showing how similar problems are solved so you can apply the method yourself
  • Doubt-clearing sessions for specific topics where classroom explanation was insufficient

We do not help with:

  • Taking exams, quizzes, or tests on behalf of a student
  • Completing graded assessments designed to evaluate the student’s own independent knowledge
  • Helping during live proctored assessments
  • Any request a student has explicitly told us is prohibited by their institution’s academic integrity policy
  • Producing work intended to be submitted as the student’s own without any genuine learning involvement from the student

On Homework and Worked Examples

This is the area where the line is most commonly asked about, and we want to be direct.

When a student brings us a homework problem and our tutor works through it step by step with explanations, that is tutoring. The student sees how to approach a class of problem. If they engage with it and apply the method to similar problems themselves, genuine learning has happened. This is how private tutors have always operated.

When a student takes a worked solution and submits it verbatim as their own work without engaging with it at all, that is academic dishonesty — and it is the student’s decision and responsibility, not a service MEB endorses or facilitates intentionally.

Our tutors explain, not just solve. A step-by-step solution with explanations is a learning resource. We structure our guidance to show the reasoning behind every step — not just the answer — specifically because understanding the method is more valuable than the answer to any individual problem.

Why Academic Dishonesty Hurts You Specifically

  • Degrees without knowledge do not perform. The engineering graduate who cannot actually do engineering gets found out quickly in professional environments. A degree is an entry ticket, not a guarantee. The knowledge you build or fail to build during your studies follows you regardless.
  • Advanced courses build on earlier ones. If you pass a course without understanding it, the next course in the sequence becomes significantly harder. This compounds over time.
  • Academic dishonesty penalties are severe. Plagiarism detection tools have improved substantially. Penalties range from grade zeroes to suspension to permanent expulsion. The risk-reward ratio is genuinely poor.
  • Your investment in education goes to waste. Tuition fees are significant. If the degree does not represent genuine learning, you have paid a great deal for a document. The point of education is the knowledge, not the certificate.

A Note on Our Evolution

MEB has been operating since 2008. Over 18 years, the service has grown and our positioning has sharpened. Our current position is unambiguous: we are a private tutoring service. Any academic guidance we provide alongside tutoring is intended as a learning resource, not a submission service.

If you encounter any language on our website that implies otherwise — particularly on older pages — please bring it to our attention at meb@myengineeringbuddy.com. We are actively updating older content to reflect our current position clearly and consistently.
