How Online Tutoring Works at MEB

What Happens Inside a Session

MEB sessions run on Google Meet with a two-way online whiteboard. Both you and the tutor can write, draw, and annotate on the same board simultaneously. You can write your attempt, point to the exact step you do not understand, and interact in real time — exactly as you would face-to-face, without any geographical constraint.

Sessions are primarily voice and whiteboard. Video from the tutor’s side is not standard — voice and whiteboard are sufficient for effective learning. If you want video enabled, just let us know.

For the best whiteboard experience, use a device with a stylus: an iPad with Apple Pencil, an Android tablet with a stylus, or a laptop with a digital pen pad. A mobile phone screen is too small — use a laptop or tablet.

You can share files (notes, PDFs, screenshots) via WhatsApp before the session or through the whiteboard’s upload feature during it. Sessions can be recorded by you using Google Meet’s built-in recording feature. MEB does not record sessions from our end but provides written notes from the tutor after every session.

Types of Sessions

Scheduled sessions — you book a specific tutor at a specific time in advance. This works best for students who need regular tutoring over weeks or months. Consistent sessions with the same tutor allow them to track your progress, identify patterns in your mistakes, and adapt their approach over time.

On-demand sessions — you contact us needing help soon and we connect you with whichever qualified tutor is available for your subject at that time. No advance booking required. This works well for one-off doubt-clearing sessions or when you have a specific problem you need resolved quickly.

How Tutor Matching Works

MEB does not use an algorithm to match students and tutors. Our student helpline team does this manually. When you describe your subject, level, course, and goal, our team identifies the tutor with the right combination of subject expertise, experience with your academic system, and availability.

You can also request a specific tutor by name or ID if you have worked with someone before. We will assign them subject to availability.

If the first tutor is not the right fit for any reason, contact us and we will assign another one at no extra charge. 75% of students find their preferred tutor on the first trial session.

Online vs. Face-to-Face Private Tutoring

Online tutoring has a genuine structural advantage over local in-person tutoring: the global pool of available tutors is vastly larger than the local pool. Instead of being limited to whoever is qualified and available within driving distance, you can work with the best available expert in your specific subject from anywhere in the world. This is particularly significant for advanced, specialised, or less common subjects where strong local tutors are genuinely rare.

The practical trade-off is that online tutoring requires the student to be self-disciplined and engaged. For younger students, especially below Grade 9, having a parent or guardian present during sessions is strongly recommended — not to monitor the content, but to provide the same oversight a parent would in a face-to-face setting. For high school and university students, this is not a practical concern.

The cost advantage is also significant. Our tutors are primarily based in India, where cost of living is lower than in North America or Europe. This allows us to offer sessions with genuinely expert tutors — most from IITs, NITs, and equivalent top institutions — at roughly half the rate of comparable in-person tutoring in the USA or UK.
