What is GRE?

GRE, short for Graduate Record Examination, is a standardized test used by thousands of graduate programs to assess verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing skills. Administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), it helps admissions committees compare applicants from different academic backgrounds. For example, a biology major might take the GRE to apply for a bioinformatics master’s in the US.

Also called the Grad Record Exam, GRE General Test, or simply the Grad Test. Some people refer to it as the ETS GRE. Others say “GRE Test,” even though the second “T” in “Test” is technically redundant.

Major topics include Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. Verbal tasks feature reading comprehension and text completion—like analyzing a scientific journal abstract. Quantitative covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data interpretation—solving real‑world problems such as budgeting costs for a campus event. Analytical Writing demands two essays: one issue task and one argument task, testing critical thinking and clarity of expression.

Introduced in 1949 by the Carnegie Foundation and then taken over by ETS in 1953, the GRE began as a paper‑based exam. It went computer‑based in 1993, offering more flexible dates. In 2011 it was overhauled to include the new scoring scale (130–170 per section) and revised question types. Subject Tests—covering fields like Physics or Psychology—have seen format tweaks but remain paper‑based. Its evolution reflects shifts in higher education needs and testing technology.

What is so special about GRE?

The GRE stands out as a versatile, widely accepted test for graduate school applications. It uses a computer-adaptive format that adjusts each question’s difficulty to a student’s skills. It covers verbal, quantitative and analytical writing, making it unique among entrance exams. With one score valid for up to five years, it helps students apply to many programs without taking different tests.

Compared to other test prep subjects, the GRE offers clear benefits and some drawbacks. On the plus side, its wide acceptance saves time by replacing multiple tests and its testing dates are flexible. On the downside, it can be costly, requires strong vocabulary, and its computer-adaptive nature may feel stressful. Some students prefer more specialized exams focused only on subject knowledge.

What are the career opportunities in GRE?

Many students take the GRE to move on to graduate programs like master’s or PhD degrees in fields such as engineering, social sciences, business, or arts. Top universities in the US, Canada, and Europe still value GRE scores for admissions and scholarships. Recent trends show some schools offering GRE waivers, but most programs expect a strong score as proof of readiness for advanced study.

After earning a graduate degree, popular job roles include data analyst, research scientist, management consultant, or university lecturer. Data analysts collect and interpret numbers to help companies make decisions. Researchers design experiments and publish findings. Consultants advise businesses on strategy, and lecturers teach and guide students. These roles vary from office work to lab research and classroom teaching.

We study for the GRE to prove our skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and clear writing. Test prep helps us learn time management, build confidence, and master question types. Good GRE results boost our graduate school applications and open doors to funding.

GRE preparation also sharpens vocabulary, logical reasoning, and math basics. These skills apply beyond one test—they help in academic writing, research, and many jobs. Structured study plans and practice tests reduce anxiety and improve performance under pressure.

How to learn GRE?

Start by learning the GRE’s three parts: Verbal, Quant, and Analytical Writing. Take a free online practice test to see your strengths. Make a weekly plan that sets goals for vocabulary, math drills, reading passages, and two practice essays. Review mistakes after each practice session, note tricky words and math formulas, and keep practicing until you master them.

Many students find the GRE challenging at first because it tests reasoning more than facts. With steady practice, timing drills, and learning test strategies, you can improve your score. Mindset matters—treat each practice test as a chance to learn, not just a score.

You can definitely self-study using books, online courses, and apps if you’re disciplined. A tutor isn’t a must, but they can give you custom feedback, help with weak spots, and keep you accountable. Think about your learning style: if you need personalized tips or struggle to stick to a plan, a tutor can speed your progress.

Our MEB tutors offer 24/7 one-on-one GRE coaching, tailored study plans, timed practice tests, and detailed feedback. We cover all GRE topics and help you build confidence under exam conditions. Our fees are affordable, and sessions fit your schedule, day or night.

On average, students spend 6 to 12 weeks preparing, studying 1–2 hours daily. If you have more time or need extra review, plan for 3 months. Busy schedules may extend prep to 4 months—just keep consistent, even if it’s 30 minutes each day.

Helpful resources include YouTube channels like Magoosh GRE Prep and ETS GRE, plus Khan Academy for math review. Visit the official GRE site at www.ets.org/gre, Magoosh blog, and Manhattan Prep blog. Top books are ETS’s Official Guide to the GRE, Manhattan Prep 5 lb. Book of GRE Practice Problems, Kaplan GRE Prep Plus, and Barron’s GRE.

College students, parents, tutors from USA, Canada, UK, Gulf etc. if you need a helping hand—online 1:1 24/7 tutoring or assignment support—our tutors at MEB can help at an affordable fee.
