The SAT math tutor helped me prepare for the math test very well. The problem-solving techniques he taught were amazing. I really gained the confidence to perform well in practice tests and, later, in the actual SAT exam.

What is SAT?

The SAT is a standardized test that most universities and colleges in the United States use for their undergraduate admissions. Originally, SAT meant the Scholastic Aptitude Test. It is now officially the SAT after changing its name many times in the interim.

The College Board, a not-for-profit organization, develops, publishes, and owns the SAT. The Educational Testing service used to develop the SAT earlier now administers it. There are 5 dates for the US students and 4 dates for the international students.

Although high school students generally take it, there are no prerequisites. The student taking the test shall be fluent in English as it is in the English language.

What are the sections in SAT?

The duration of SAT is three hours, and it has 154 questions. It comprises of three tests:

(1) the reading test

52 questions in 65 minutes. Each reading test has five passages with 10 to 11 questions in each passage. The passages are generally literary or informational based on social science or science.

All of the questions in the reading test relate to one or more passages. A passage may have informational graphics like charts, tables, and graphs. It assesses your aptitude to read and comprehend texts similar in difficulty to that in your college and professional career.

(2) the writing and language test

44 questions in 35 minutes. It has four passages with 11 questions in each passage. The questions evaluate your ability to improve the clarity of communication or correct the English grammar, punctuation, or usage.

The passages fall into three categories:

  • Explanatory or informative passages that educate about a topic
  • Argument passages that choose a strong position support the claims with evidence
  • Narrative Nonfiction passages that narrate a story with a clear flow containing a beginning, middle, and an end

(3) the Math test

58 questions in 80 minutes, and it has two sub-sections. One of them is a 55-minute section with 38 questions where you can use a calculator. Another is a 25-minute section with 20 questions where calculators are not permitted.

It assesses your ability to apply math skills and concepts to problems you likely would solve in advanced academic programs and professional life. The questions are mainly from math branches like algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and complex numbers.

Most of the test questions are multiple-choice. Some math questions require a written answer, and all questions carry no penalty for guesswork. Hence, it is advisable to mark an answer rather than leave it blank.
