  • Mitchell Sherman (30253)

University of Texas - Austin (USA)

Easy to Arrange but Quality Fell Short

" I’m Rajiv, Mitchell Sherman’s uncle, and I arranged chemistry homework support through My EngineeringBuddy when my nephew was stuck on his IBDP assignment. Contacting them was straightforward via WhatsApp, and they even offered a free trial to match him with Kumar C. We could see Kumar’s profile on their website, but all our communication happened through email and Google Meet. Unfortunately, the promised plagiarism-free work arrived late and didn’t have the depth we needed. Overall, the help we received was below expectations. "

What is IBDP?

1. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two‑year pre‑university curriculum for students aged 16–19. Developed by the International Baccalaureate (IB), it fosters critical thinking, intercultural understanding and breadth of knowledge. Schools in over 150 countries offer it. A high score can boost your uni applications.

2. Also called the IB Diploma, IB DP, the IB Two‑Year Programme or simply the IB.

3. Six subject groups: • Studies in Language and Literature (e.g. English A Literature HL) • Language Acquisition (e.g. Spanish B SL) • Individuals and Societies (History HL, Economics SL) • Sciences (Biology HL, Chemistry SL, Physics HL) • Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches HL, Applications & Interpretations SL) • The Arts (Visual Arts SL, Theatre HL) Plus core: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

4. 1968: launch in Geneva with 11 schools. 1975: first exams held globally—students from Switzerland to Canada sat papers in May and November, marking export of a unified curriculum. 1987: IB introduces computer‑based record‑keeping, easing administrative loads for teachers in Australia. 1994: diploma gains US college credit recognition. 2000: curriculum review adds TOK essays, heightening critical analysis. 2014: digital TOK presentations debut, reflecting growing tech integration. Today over 1.5 million students have graduated, making the IBDP a globally respected credential.

What is so special about IBDP?

IBDP is special because it mixes six subjects with a core of Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity, Service, and the Extended Essay. Students learn science, math, languages, arts, and social studies together. This approach makes them connect ideas across fields and see learning in real life. It also encourages open minds and global awareness, not just exam success.

IBDP offers strong skills in research, writing, and critical thinking, and many universities recognize its value. On the plus side, students gain deep understanding, discipline, and a wider worldview. But it can be heavy, with constant assignments, exams, and time pressure. Unlike single-subject courses, you must juggle many topics. Some students find this thrilling, while others feel stressed.

What are the career opportunities in IBDP?

After finishing the IBDP, students can enter top universities worldwide. They often pursue bachelor’s degrees in science, humanities, business, or art. IBDP graduates have a strong background in research and critical thinking, which helps them in advanced courses and international programs.

Many former IBDP students become business analysts, teachers, engineers, or consultants. They work on real problems, lead teams, and research new ideas. The IBDP’s emphasis on clear writing and collaboration makes graduates ready for jobs needing communication, creativity, and critical analysis.

Students prepare for IBDP exams to master subject topics, improve study habits, and meet diploma standards. Test practice builds time management, exam strategy, and confidence under pressure. This makes test day less stressful and boosts scores, which can lead to better university choices.

IBDP skills apply beyond school: research methods help in college papers, group projects mirror workplace teams, and strong study habits support lifelong learning. Many universities recognize high IB scores with credit or scholarships, giving IBDP learners a head start.

How to learn IBDP?

Start by breaking the IBDP into its core parts: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, CAS and your six subjects. Get the official syllabuses from IBO.org, list every topic, and slot them into a weekly timetable. Gather a reliable textbook or online course for each subject. Make concise notes as you study, then practise with past papers under timed conditions. Review mark schemes to see what examiners look for. Tackle weak spots with targeted exercises, and revisit them regularly.

IBDP is definitely demanding. You cover in‑depth material across languages, sciences, maths, humanities and a core that values critical thinking and research skills. The workload and level of analysis can feel tough at first, but with steady planning, regular revision and the right support it becomes much more manageable—and even rewarding.

You can self‑study if you’re very disciplined, have good materials and stick to a revision plan. But a tutor adds structure, answers questions in real time, offers tailored feedback on essays and internal assessments, and shares exam strategies. Their guidance often saves you hours of confusion and keeps you motivated during busy periods.

At MEB, we match you with experienced IB tutors for 24/7 one‑on‑one lessons, create personalised study plans, review your assignments and Extended Essay drafts, and run focused mock exams. Our tutors work around your schedule and explain complex ideas in simple steps, all at affordable rates tailored to your needs.

Most students spend about 2–3 hours a day on IBDP subjects during the two‑year course, increasing to 4–5 hours daily in the final three to four months before exams. If you focus more time on harder subjects or weaker topics, you’ll build confidence and improve grades steadily.

YouTube channels like IB Mastery, Kognity, CrashCourse and Khan Academy cover key concepts in bite‑sized videos. Check IBO.org for official syllabuses and past papers, OSC IB (oxfordstudycourses.com), InThinking.net and Studynova.com for worksheets and quizzes. Popular books include Oxford IB Study Guides and Cambridge University Press Course Books for each subject, Pearson Baccalaureate texts, “Physics for the IB Diploma” by K.A. Tsokos, “Chemistry for the IB Diploma” by Timberlake, “Business Management for the IB Diploma” by Peter Stimpson, and “English A Literature” by Brigid Allen.

College students, parents and tutors in the USA, Canada, UK, Gulf and beyond: if you need a helping hand, from online 1:1 24/7 tutoring to assignment support, our MEB tutors can help at an affordable fee.
